It was a case of what might have been for Sebastian Söderberg at last week’s Volvo Car Scandinavian Mixed event in Sweden where he eventually finished tied second behind Linn Grant despite such a dominant performance over the first three days.

The Swede was in imperious form over the first three days with rounds of 63, 66, 66 before a final round 77 unravelled much of the earlier good work. That said, Söderberg still finished tied second on 16-under alongside Scotland’s Calum Hill and just one stroke behind Grant, who made her own little piece of history with the win.

Grant produced the largest final round comeback in DP World Tour history as she overturned an 11-stroke deficit to win the Volvo Car Scandinavian Mixed for the second time.

The Swede made headlines two years ago when she became the first female winner of a DP World Tour event at this tournament, and she carded a seven under par final round of 65 to take the title at Vasatorps Golfklubb.

The result was even sweeter for Grant, who was this week competing in her hometown of Helsingborg with her brother Jonathan as caddie.

Söderberg had held an eight-stroke overnight lead over nearest challenger Hill but was unable to continue the sensational form which saw him reach 21-under-par after three rounds.

“I have very mixed emotions. Like I said before, I feel honestly terrible for Sebastian. I don’t even have words for it. I can’t imagine how he feels. At the same time, I’m so surprised standing here as a winner again, in my hometown. It’s amazing,” said Grant after her win.

The upshot for Söderberg is he improved his second place in the Race to Dubai Rankings and closed the gap on leader Rory McIlroy. The 33-year-old has been the model of consistency this season with seven top 10 finishes, including runner-up in the ISPS HANDA Championship, Hero Indian Open and last weekend’s Scandinavian Mixed.
