The South African professional attended the university of Minnesota before graduating and turned professional in 2013. Van Rooyen lives in Jupiter Florida and has competed on the PGA Tour since 2020. He also features on the DP World Tour. He has won six times, including two PGA Tour wins, the Worldwide Technology Championship in 2023 and Barracuda Championship in 2021.

He won twice in 2017, the Eye of Africa PGA Championship on the Sunshine Tour and the Hainan Open on the Challenge Tour. After finishing inside the top 15 on the 2017 Challenge Tour rankings, he graduated to the DP World Tour where he excelled with five top 10 finishes to win the 2018 graduate of the year award. In 2019 Erik continued his great form with his maiden win on the European Tour at the Scandinavian Invitational and also broke into the top 50 of the World Rankings.

The South African enjoys the outdoors and spending time with his wife and family on weeks off.
